Marion Fry of Ada, Oklahoma, officiating, assisted by Bill Lewis, pastor of the 11th Street Baptist Church in Shamrock. A Wheeler County deputy sheriff serving the Shamrock area, Carrol was gunned down Sunday night, December 31, 1972, while in the performance of duty. Born January 23, 1937, in Shamrock, he would have been 36 years old his next birthday. Pallbearers were Stephen O'Gorman, Kenneth Stokes, Wayne Henry, Jimmy Al Anderson, Jackie Woodruff, Jim Smith, Donald Settles and Leon Pepper. Interment was in Shamrock Cemetery with Richerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Copeland was appointed Deputy Sheriff on August 21, 1972, replacing George W. A resident of Shamrock most of his life, Copeland moved to Idaho Springs, Idaho 15 years ago and returned to accept the law enforcement job. A staff supervisor working on nuclear reactors under government contract, primarily in material testing, Carrol spent 13 years in Idaho, and more recently was working for a trucking firm in Borger when contacted by Sheriff Bus Dorman about the deputy's job. Copeland attended Shamrock High School and took special training in business management following graduation in 1955. He was a past president of the Arco, Idaho Lions Club, a member of the Baptist Church and the Texas Sheriff's Association. He was graduated in mid September from the Amarillo Police Academy. In a tribute to the slain officer, Dorman said, "Carrol, with his varied work experience and training, brought outstanding qualifications to the deputy position and performed his job with dedication and a high sense of duty. His untimely death has saddened not only the citizens of his own community but those living in a wide surrounding area".
