Bio
Marlyn M. Arland died December 9, 2012 at Community Hospital in Torrington. Marlyn was born May 24, 1926 in Montrose, South Dakota the daughter of Joseph Henry and Bernice (Gildea) McCabe. She attended school at Montrose until her family moved to Walla Walla, Washington in 1941. Marlyn graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1944 and she joined the Cadet Nursing Corps at St. Mary's Nursing School in Walla Walla, a government program that trained female nurses. She graduated from nursing school in 1947. On September 15, 1947 she married Warren Arland at Walla Walla. She continued to work at St. Mary's Hospital and in 1955 she worked the night shift as a staff nurse at Walla Walla's VA Hospital. She took classes in the day and received her Bachelors of Science degree in 1963. She later became deputy assistant chief medical director for nursing programs. In 1978, the family moved to Poplar Bluffs, MO where she started and was the supervisor of a VA nursing home. In 1981, she transferred to the VA Medical Center in Cheyenne. She retired in 1985 and the couple moved to Torrington in 1986. Her husband Warren died in 1992. Marlyn published several articles in nursing magazines. She enjoyed refurbishing dolls for the Torrington Fire Department and later Goshen Ministries to give at Christmas.She was a member of the St. Rose Catholic Church, the DAV Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. Survivors include her daughter Mary Jean Medina of Sheridan, WY; her son David (Diana) Arland of Torrington, WY; her sister Mary Winston of Starkville, MS; her brother Bill McCabe of Moscow, ID and her sister Elaine Spencer of Clarkston, WA; 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Warren; and her sister Patty Korkow.
