Carolina Martel was born in the village of Kassel in South Russia to Friedrich Theobald Martel and Christina Retzer. The family immigrated to the U.S. and settled in North Dakota. She married William Erlenbusch January 6, 1906 in North Dakota. They had 11 children: William, Christine, John, Fredrick, Katherine, Caroline, Louise, Christian, Jacob Albert, Juanita and Henry.
