Teddy J. Calkins, 89, of Cheyenne died Nov. 30 at his home. He was born Feb. 9, 1923, in Sargent, Neb. Teddy enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940, and was a pharmacist mate. He served during World War II and Korea and was aboard the USS Solace during the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. After serving aboard the USS Solace, he went to a beach battalion, caring for the wounded in the Pacific Island campaigns and then to Sasebo, Japan. In after World War II, he returned to Nebraska, where he became a barber. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict, and afterwards he returned to Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming as a barber. In 1961, he purchased Collie's Barbershop in Cheyenne and remained there until he retired in 1987. Teddy joined the International Order of the Odd Fellows in 1946 and held every office. He was a founding life member of Frontier VFW post 11453. Mr. Calkins is survived by his wife, Doris "Elaine" Calkins; son, Sidney (Mary) Calkins of Cheyenne; three grandchildren, Timothy (Rosalinda), David (Jackie) Calkins and Amy Calkins; three great-grandchildren, Samantha Calkins, David Calkins Jr. and Alexander Calkins; and two stepdaughters, Julie Walsh and Diana Hoffman. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Nadine Calkins; children, Larry and Carolyn Calkins; parents, Theodore and Sophronia Calkins; siblings, Leo, Wayne, William Calkins and Lilas Honeycutt. © Wyoming Tribune Eagle December 3, 2012
