His obituary says that James was one of the most prominent men of Polk County, the son of Harvey Calhoun and Minerva Morris. He was a well-to-do farmer and director of the Benton Bank, serving as secretary for the board. He was one of seven brothers and sisters and only two survived him, M. V. Calhoun and Sarah McDaris. James was said to be a Christian gentleman 'in the quiet everyday way'. The Rev. I. H. Clarke and Rev.J. E. Fogelman conducted his memorial service and in the presence of about five hundred neighbors, friends and family. At the residence, young people from Benton gave the song service and a quartet from Clear Springs furnished the music at the funeral. His most intimate associates for over sixty years say they never knew of his wrongdoing anyone, and his business associates have said publicly that his word was as good as any man's bond.
