Fatally Wounded Was Accidentally Shot While Hunting - Death Results One of the saddest tasks that has fallen to our lot is chronicling the untimely death of our young friend, Jack Highley, which occurred near the Fred Veeh home in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood, Tuesday morning of this week at about 11 o'clock. The young man lived until yesterday morning when death came thread of life is snapped in twain and a soul goes out into the Great Beyond to meet its God. Tuesday morning, in the company of Glenn and Ralph McDonald, young Highley started to the Bishop sale, the boys taking with them their guns, thinking to fell any chance game coming their way. As they drew near the Fred Veeh farm and in going through a fence, Glenn's gun accidentally discharged, the entire load entering the fleshy part of the leg of the unfortunate young man, literally mangling and tearing the flesh from the bone. He was immediately taken into the Veeh home, and medical aid hastily summoned. Upon the arrival of Drs. Chapman of Speed and Nelson of Phillipsburg and after a careful examination of the wound, they deemed an operation the only available chance of saving the young man's life. The limb was at once amputated, but being already weak from the loss of blood, the trying ordeal was too much for poor Jack and he never rallied from the effects of the anaesthetic. The tragic ending of this young life casts a pall of sadness and gloom over the entire community which time alone can efface. The affair is even more appalling in that the young man was the only support of his widowed mother. We commend her to the living God who has infallibly promised to shed his love and protecting care round about the widow and orphan. He alone can sustain in this dark hour of trial and sorrow. The young man by whose hand came the sad ending of his unfortunate companion is heart-broken and prostrate with grief and remorse, refusing to leave his friend's bedside until the end. The boys had been boon companions since childhood and the affair is indeed a most terrible blow to him. The whole community joins in extending sympathy to the bereaved and sorrowing ones.
