Bio

James was born and raised in Gibson County. He was a nineteen year old farmhand on the Hardin and Nancy Wheeler farm in 1870, Hardin died in 1871. James and Nancy married the following year in 1872. He and Nancy raised her three Wheeler children and had six more children of their own. James death in 1887 led to Nancy subsequently moving the family to Nebraska to join her mother and uncle. James' burial location is unknown. As is the case with the burial for many of the Walling and Knowles family members in Gibson County, it seems likely that he was buried on a family farm in Montgomery TWP, Gibson Co., Indiana. Burials at this time/region were regularly on such family farms, often with non-stone markers to save money. Unfortunately, over time time the markers disintegrated and the burial sites were lost as farm ownerships changed hands. James's and his wife Nancy had six children and lived on a farm that Nancy had inherited upon the death of her first husband. This was also near farms owned by both of their parents.
