Sweetwater Triplet Charity Lawson Dies SWEETWATER — Charity Cardwell Lawson, 95, one of three triplets — Faith, Hope and Charity — who brought worldwide attention to Sweetwater for their longevity, died Friday in a local hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with Bob Dupont officiating. Burial will be in Roby Cemetery. Charity, in a May 16, 1984, Abilene Reporter-News article, said she "waited for the doctor" as she was the last of three triplets to be born to Mr. and Mrs. Elza Cardwell on May 18, 1899, in the Elmont community in McLennan County. Before the doctor could make the 15-mile drive to the family's farm home, Faith and Hope had already made their appearance into the world. The triplets, they were told, were "raised on a pallet," and Charity, the one their mother nursed, sometimes stole and hid her sisters' bottles. Names for the triplets were submitted by the wife of President Grover Cleveland, who had heard about the girls. When birthday time rolled around, each girl dressed alike. On their 84th birthday, the three flew to New York to appear on the Bill Curtis segment of the CBS Morning News. Faith Davis, who died Oct. 3, 1994, preceded her sister in death by three months and three days. Charity moved to Sweetwater in 1928 where she owned and operated Charity's Beauty Shop for 25 years before retiring. She was a member of Business and Professional Women's Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2479 Auxiliary and Fourth and Elm Church of Christ. Hope Brock of Sweetwater is the last surviving triplet. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Memorials may be sent to Nutrition Activity Program, 1701 Elm, Sweetwater 79556.
