John and wife, Nannie, with their six children came to Mills County from Ranger, the Bullock Community in 1918. The Ranger oil boom was in full swing, and John Will didn't want to raise his family in that environment. Will heard of cheap land for sale in Mills County, so he came by train to check out places for sale. In Goldthwaite, he was told there was land for sale in Center City, so he took a buggy to Center City. Will bought land from Tom Gardner for $7.00 an acre. It had lots of running water from both South and North Bennett Creeks, being in between the two. He bought the place and he moved his family to Mills County by covered wagon, some of their being shipped also. The family loved this new home, as it had water in the house - there was a windmill pumping up water into a huge storage tank, and there was also swimming places, and hunting & fishing was plentiful on this land. The family raised cotton, and the children helped pick the cotton. They took their cotton to the gin in Goldthwaite by horse drawn wagons. They had a large garden and milk cows, and sold the cream and eggs at the store in Center City. They also had hogs. Their boys went to war (WWI), Fayne being the only one not to go overseas. Will and Nannie are buried in Center City Cemetery along with Mary Bernadine who died early on. (MORE OBIT TO FOLLOW LATER)
