Bio

Helen Williams Kraucunas Kahlandt was born Aug 26, 1917, Quinnebaugh Township outside Decatur, NE, to Joseph and Viola (Craig) Williams. She died Sept 5, 2013, at Creighton Univ Med Center in Omaha, NE. The Mass of Christian burial was Sept 10, 2013, 10:00am at Holy Family Catholic Church in Decatur with burial at Hillcrest Cemetery, Decatur, arrangements by Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah. Helen attended rural county school, graduating from Decatur HS in 1935, and in 1937 graduating as an RN from Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing in Council Bluffs, IA. She moved to Chicago, IL, working at several hospitals as an RN. In WW II she served as the public health nurse for Teletype. Upon her return to Burt County she worked as a nurse at several hospitals. She was appointed administrator of Tekamah Nursing Home in 1964 and retired from that post in 1982. On Aug 30, 1941, Helen married Peter Kraucunas and they had two children, moved to Burt County, NE and began farming. Mr. Kracunas died in 1973. Helen married George Kahlandt Apr 26, 1976 and six stepchildren were added to her family. George died in 1991. Helen was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tekamah, VFW Auxiliary and neighborhood extension club. She enjoyed crocheting afghans, growing flowers, gardening and lawn mowing with her John Deere tractor mower, collecting and studying antiques, and decorating cakes for special events. She and niece, Jane Judt, avidly studied genealogy to complete their family history. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Peter Kraucunas and George Kahlandt; brothers, Lloyd and Riley Williams; brother-in-law, Lavern Fleischman; and niece, Lucretia Reno. Survivors include her sister, Lucille Fleischman of Oakland, NE; daughter, Debbie Kracunas Speck of Omaha, NE; son, John P. (Lana) Kraucunas of Decatur; six stepchildren, George (Sandra) Kahlandt of Decatur, Larry (Virginia) Kahlandt, Lloyd (Mary) Kahlandt, Kathy (Steve) Chatt all of Tekamah, Cindy (Stan) Sudduth of Denver, CO, Sue (Jamie) Swanson of Omaha, five grandchildren, seventeen step grandchildren, two great grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
