Bio

George inherited the Macklin estate upon the death of his brother Benoni. By 1878 he was operating the Elkhorn Water Mills from his office at 317 Broadway in downtown Frankfort, and he later had an office on the southwest corner of Wapping and St. Clair Streets. Eventually, he was involved in several Frankfort businesses - a pork processing plant, a coal yard at High and Broadway, a High Street ferry and a whiskey warehouse. The warehouse, on the east side of St. Clair near the KY River bridge, was destroyed by fire in 1869. Over 3000 barrels of whiskey were lost in the fire. George had the first telephone in Frankfort. Installed in 1878, only two years after the invention of this device, it provided a direct line connecting his office with his coal yard a few blocks away. ***Information taken from the book "Frankfort Cemetery The Westminster Abbey of Kentucky"***
