Bio

Virgil was 83 when he passed away on Wednesday at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. Born to George and Mary (Pitsford) Smith. He married Maria Wellmann on May 15, 1982, in Jefferson. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jefferson. Virgil loved the outdoors, enjoyed hunting, and cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a very loving husband and took good care of Maria. He always was there to help others and always put others before himself. He enjoyed telling stories and would strike up a conversation with anyone willing to listen. Virgil loved his Ford four-wheel-drive pickup trucks. He leaves behind his wife, two sons and their wives, five daughters, three sons-in-law, 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five sisters, two brothers, four brothers-in-lawand many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four grandsons, William Smith, Virgil Smith, Brian Raasch and Curtis Heino; one brother, Walter Smith; and four sisters, Gladys Grapes, Opal Woods, Mary Smith and Margaret Smith. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jefferson on Monday, Oct. 8, with the Rev. Wayne Mueller officiating. Burial will take place in Union Cemetery in Jefferson.
