Bio

Harold L. Smolik, 66, of Alma died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at Alma, Nebraska. Harold was born on April 14, 1946, in Burwell to Emanuel Rudolph Smolik and Clara Pauline Olson. He was the first of four sons and was born on Palm Sunday. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife; daughter, Annette Templeton and her husband, Timothy, of Laguna Beach, Calif.; son, Anton Smolik and his wife, Debra, of Alma; brothers, Glenn Smolik of Houston, Paul Smolik and his wife, Karen, of Kearney and Mark Smolik of Naponee; grandchildren, Emma, Ehren and Elana Smolik, all at home with their parents in Alma; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends. Harold was baptized May 19, 1946, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Geranium near Ord. He was confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Ord. He attended grade school at St. Mary's Parochial School in Ord, the first three years of high school at Ord High School and his senior year of high school at Alma where he graduated with the class of 1964. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1964 until 1969. On Dec. 17, 1966, he married Janet "Jan" Brugh at the Lutheran Church in Lincoln. They continued to reside in Lincoln where he was employed by the Nebraska Department of Revenue and later for the Nebraska Department of Administrative Services. In 1977, they moved to Patterson Harbor in Republican City, where he operated Patterson Harbor from 1976 until 1996. In 1981, he operated Harlan Marine Center in Alma. In 1996, he purchased and operated A-1 Appliance until 2010. In 2003, Harold planted the Ponderosa Vineyard four miles northeast of Alma and that is where he was when he passed away Sunday unexpectedly. He was a past member of the Alma Chamber of Commerce, was a member of the Main Street Band and was on the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Wine Grape Growers Association. He was a member of and helped promote the Nebraska Governor's Cup Tournament, was a member of the Harlan Lake Association and served on the Alma Airport Authority. He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Karen Smolik, Glenn's wife. Source: Kearney Hub, October 1, 2012
