Joe Scarmardo of Waco, a retired food store co-owner and operator, Aug. 1992 died Monday Aug. 1992 at a local nursing home. He was 78. Services will be a 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Louis Catholic Church, Monsignor Mark Deering officiating. Burial will be at Waco Memorial Park. A rosary will be recited at 7 tonight at Wilkirson-Hatch Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Scarmardo was born July 1, 1914, in Caldwell to Carlo Scamardo and Sarah Malazzo Scamardo. He was raised and attended school in Waco. He married Mary Mormino Scarmardo on July 16, 1973; she died Jan. 3, 1987. Mr. Scarmardo co-owned and operated Scarmardo's Fine Foods in Waco for 54 years, retiring in 1975. Customer service was excellant and Joe cut many aged beef steaks for his customers. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post No. 121 and St. Louis Catholic Church. Survivors include a niece, Rosalie Devorsky of Waco; a nephew, Luke Scarmardo Jr. of Dripping Springs; a great-niece, Patricia Godfrey of Katy; and three great-nephews, W. R. Miller Jr. of Robinson and Joey Scarmardo and Tony Scarmardo, both of Austin. Waco Tribune Herald Aug 26, 1992
