Sheriff Ray Boyd, 51, Plattsburg, died in his sleep early Saturday morning as the result of an apparent heart attack. He underwent open-heart surgery a year ago, but apparently had been in good health since that time. There was no indication Friday night, when he retired, that there was anything wrong with his health. He had made two trips to Jefferson City last week to take prisoners there. Facing the emergency, the Clinton County court appointed the widow, Helen Boyd, to serve as sheriff until a special election Dec, 29, Clinton County clerk John O'Day announced. Mr. Boyd had been sheriff in Clinton County 14years. He was elected in 1976 to his fourth term in that office. He had been active in Democratic politics many years. He was first vice president in the Missouri sheriffs Association. Sheriff Boyd was born at Frazer and graduated from high school at Plattsburg. He served in the United States Merchant Marines from 1944 until 1947. He is survived by his wife, Helen Boyd, at home; two sons, Carl Ray Boyd, Tehran, Iran, and Paul Boyd at home; three daughters, Mrs. Cara Georgeoff, Wichita; Mrs. Nita Randolph, Liberty and Lana Jo Boyd at home; a brother, Paul C. Boyd, Lakeland, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Virginia Cash, Seaside, Ore.; Mrs. Bernice Brown, Fairfield, Cal., and Mrs. Betty Pickering, Fairfield; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter. The body is at Cox funeral home, Plattsburg. Service arrangements are pending awaiting the arrival of his son from Iran. It was stated that the family will not be at the funeral home to receive friends.
