Info submitted by Connie Kappelman McKean (#47411136) Kathy Marie Guenthner, 55, of Elk Point, SD passed away Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the St. Lukes Hospital in Sioux City, IA after a long battle with MS. Kathy "Sky Rocket" Varilek was born July 4, 1954 in Wagner, SD to Elvern and Margaret (Durham) Varilek. She graduated from Geddes High School and married John Guenthner on June 1, 1973 in Geddes, SD. She attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD and later graduated from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD with her business degree. She was the Union County Register of Deeds until her MS forced her to retire. Kathy is survived by her husband John of Elk Point, three sons; Jeremy (Jen), Jason (Whitney Tesar) and Josh all of Omaha, NE, two brothers; Tom (Bev) Varilek, and Mick (Lynn) Varilek both of Geddes, and two sisters; Donna (Larry) Dufek of Watertown, SD and Lory (Dave) Dufrain of Geddes. She is also survived by two grandchildren (Preston and Peyton). A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, February 6, 2010 at the United Parish Church in Elk Point, SD. Memorials may be directed to the United Parish Window Fund.
