SHELBY — Eugene Alfred Gabel, age 80, of Shelby, Nebraska, passed away Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at his home in Shelby. Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Shelby, with Father John Rooney officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Shelby. Dubas Funeral Home, of Osceola and Stromsburg, in charge of arrangements. Eugene was born Feb. 7, 1932, to Alfred and Magdalen (Rinke) Gabel in Shelby. He attended country school near Shelby and graduated from Shelby High School in 1950. His junior year of high school he joined the Navy Reserves where he served for 12 years on aircraft carriers as an airplane mechanic. After graduating from high school, Eugene began farming in the Shelby area. On Dec. 28, 1957, he was united in marriage to Jeanette Leigh Dawn at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. To this union one daughter was born. Eugene started selling seed corn and crop/hail insurance with his dad. After his dad passed away, Eugene continued selling and farming in the Shelby area for many more years, retiring in the early 1990s. He was lifelong member of Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church, past member of the church board, was very active in the Knights of Columbus of which he was 3rd Degree member for 60-plus years and a 4th Degree member for 45 years. He served on the rural fire board and was a past president and helped to get the new fire hall built. Survivors include his wife, Jeanette, of Shelby; daughter, Krystal Gabel, of Lincoln; three brothers, Edmund Gabel, of Lincoln, Michael (Leah), of Akron, OH, and Roger (Sandy) Gabel, of Shelby; one sister, Alyce Morgan, of Shelby; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
