James T. Chmelka, 88, of Brainard died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the Butler County Health Care Center in David City. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Brainard with the Rev. Stephen Cooney officiating. Burial is at the parish cemetery. Visitation is from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Thursday at the Holesovsky Mortuary in Brainard and after 6 p.m. at the church with a 7:30 p.m. Knights of Columbus and Catholic Workman rosary followed by a parish rosary. Mr. Chmelka was born Sept. 18, 1911, near Brainard in Saunders County to John A. and Anna (Kliment) Chmelka. He attended Saunders County Rural District 68. He married Irma M. Belik Sept. 7, 1937, in Prague. He farmed in Saunders County until retiring in Brainard in 1976. He was a member of the church and served as acolyte many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Workmen and served as president of the local chapter, served on Saunders County Rural District 68, Newman Township Board in Saunders County and a rural Saunders County Cemetery Board. Survivors include his wife; two sons, James E. (Marilyn) of Valparaiso and Donald F. (Vikki) of Escondido, Calif.; one sister, Rose Belik of Prague; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and six sisters. Memorials are in care of the family. Roberts Funeral Home in David City is in charge of arrangements.
