Bio

Wilfred John (Bill) Hupke, 84, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Mapleton, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, in Scottsdale. The body was cremated. Memorial services will be at a later date in Mapleton. Wilfred was born Sept. 2, 1922, in Woodbury County, Iowa, the son of Frank and Helen (Ryan) Hupke, and the first of eight children born to this union. His family left the farm and moved to Mapleton in 1937. Wilfred attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1942. Shortly after graduation, he entered the United States Navy at Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois. Wilfred was united in holy matrimony to Dorothy O'Connor on Oct. 12, 1946, at Great Lakes Naval Chapel in Great Lakes, Ill. Four children were born to this union. The couple lived and raised their family in Mundelein, Ill. They were members of Santa Maria del Popola Church. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct 12, 2006. Wilfred worked as a supervisor at Great Lakes Naval Base, custodian for Woodland Hills Academy and a chauffeur for the Chicago Tribune and Continental Bank. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; his children, Nancy (Brian) McGarvey of Ambler, Pa., James (Cindy) Hupke of DeKalb, Ill., Randy Hupke of San Diego, Calif, and Julie (Steve) Decker of Phoenix, Ariz., 12 grandchildren, Patrick (Shirley) McGarvey, Amy (Michael) Moore, Kevin (Lisa) McGarvey, Tim McGarvey, Michele (Kurt) Kunger, Chris (Gretchen) Hupke, Garrett Hupke, Janelle Hupke, Blake Hupke, Tawnya Decker, Jena Decker, and Marcea Decker; five great-grandchildren Victoria Martinez, Matthew Martinez, Alexander Moore, William Hupke, and Liam McGarvey; a brother, Lester (Frances) Hupke of Carlisle, Iowa, three sisters LouAnn (Robert) Owens of Sarasota, Fla., JoAnn (Robert) Frahm of Galva Iowa, Loretta Hupke of Los Alamos NM; a sister-in-law, Jerry Hupke of Celina, Texas, and many other loving and caring nieces, nephews, and friends. Wilfred was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Helen, an infant brother Herbert, a brother Lawrence, and a sister, Berneice Green.
