Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), July 16, 1914, p. 1, col. 2 JOSEPH L. SVOBODA IS DEAD. Organizer of Abie State Bank Died in Omaha July 11. Banker Joseph L. Svoboda, a resident of Abie from 1904 to 1912, organizer of the Abie State Bank, a member of the Butler county board of supervisors from 1907 to 1911, died at an early hour on Saturday, July 11. Death was from liver trouble, from which he had been ill for more than a year. He was confined to his bed three months. Mr. Svoboda was president of the Security State Bank of South Omaha, which was organized by him about a year ago. A very large assemblage of friends of Mr. Svoboda attended the funeral services which were held in S. S. Peter's and Paul's Catholic church at Abie on Tuesday morning, July 14, at 10 o'clock. Relatives of Mr. Svoboda were present from Howells, Dodge, Omaha and Schuyler. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. Nemec, pastor of S. S. Peter's and Paul's church. The pall-bearers were Louis Brecka, Anton Chladek, Joseph Hamsa, E. J. Mashek, F. J. Roh, J. F. Roh, F. J. Walla and John Walla, all members of the Abie camp of Modern Woodmen of America, of which order Mr. Svoboda was a member. Interment was in S. S. Peter's and Paul's cemetery. In attendance at the funeral, going from David City, were five members of the county board, J. R. Evans, George Fleming, John Glock, F. C. Judevine and John Kriz, also County Clerk M. J. Holland, County Superintendent F. A. Stech, County Treasurer W. F. Delaney, Clerk of District Court Joseph Havel, Sheriff I. J. West, M. J. Bouse, George Etting, Arthur Myatt, C. O. Crosthwaite, J. G. Ross, I. T. McCaskey J. H. Owen, C. G. Hoker, J. F. Albin, Joseph Sobotka, George Wanser and R. P. Showalter. The business houses in Abie were closed during the time of the funeral. Death came to Mr. Svoboda in his 46th year. He was born in Svetly, Bohemia, January 14, 1869. He came to the United States and to Nebraska with his parents while yet a child. He grew to manhood on his father's farm near Howells. He was married at Howells in 1890 to Miss Mary Misek. Leaving the farm, he engaged in business in Howells and served as postmaster there. He then became assistant cashier of a bank in Howells. Coming to Abie from Howells in 1904, he organized the Abie State Bank and also acquired proprietory interest in the Abie Mills, making both enterprises highly successful. He served for two terms as a member of the Butler county board of supervisors, from 1907 to 1911. Early in 1911 he was appointed state bank examinier by Governor Aldrich. At the end of his term as bank examiner Mr. Svoboda became cashier of the Omaha State Bank. Some 16 months later he organized the Security State Bank of Omaha and became its head. At the time of his death he held interests also in banks at Abie, Lindsay and Butte. He was a man of great business ability and of remarkable energy and enterprise. In account of his death the Omaha World-Herald estimates his estate at $100,000. Mr. Svoboda was a member of the Roman Catholic church and a generous contributor to the church. He was a member of six fraternal orders, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Woodmen of the World, the Z. C. B. J., the Knights of Pythias, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Sokol. Surviving Mr. Svoboda are Mrs. Svoboda and seven children, Emil, Matilda, Edward, Joseph, William, Rudolf and Marie, all residing in Omaha, his parents, who reside in Howells, and two brothers and three sisters.
