The Goodland Register Fri., Nov. 2, 1906 Sudden Death of VAN VLEET Dropped Dead At Dairy Farm Of W. H. Stone Inquest Held by Coroner Gulick—Verdict of Jury was Death From Natural Causes. Charles L. Van Vleet, a farmer, dropped dead Monday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at the dairy farm of W. R. Stone, about four and a half miles northeast of Goodland. Dr. A. C. Gulick, the county coroner, was at once sent for. Arriving at the place, he took charge of the body and ordered its removal to the Bower undertaking establishment. Tuesday at 10 o'clock a. m. an inquest was held over the body. The jury were B. F. Brown, L. R Cooper, John Detmer, A. Bowman, Jake Lemmer and Pat Cochrane. The witnesses were Claude Sholes, John Entwistle and R. D. Ross. The verdict of the jury was "died of natural causes." Dr. Gulick, in charge of the inquiry, diagnosed the case as heart failure. It was learned of Jake Lemmer, who was a near neighbor to Mr. Van Vleet for several years, that he had been nearly incapacitated for labor for a long time with asthma and heart disease. Many thought him inactive, but the sequel proved clearly enough that his indisposition was serious and wearying. Mr. Van Vleet lived not far from the Sargeant place, north and west of Goodland about fifteen miles, near the north line of the county. He is survived by a wife and five children, the oldest a boy in his teens. Because of his feeble health, he has had a hard time of it on his farm. The family moved to Sherman county from Decatur county about seven years ago. Mr. Van Vleet was in Goodland Tuesday fore-noon and expressed himself as feeling unusually well. He drove out to the Stone place to purchase some young calves. The farm hands loaded the calves into his wagon and assisted in tying them securely. He was standing by the wagon ready to start and was telling the men how he managed the feeding of the young animals, when suddenly he hesitated in the conversation and fell head-long to the ground, and was dead. He was a man about 40 years of age. The family, thus suddenly bereaved, deserve the sympathy and assistance of our good people in the county and doubtless will find friends in their affliction. Funeral of C.L. VAN VLEET Held Thursday Afternoon at Bower's Undertaking Room The funeral services of Charles L. Van Vleet, whose sudden death occurred Tuesday, was held at the Bower undertaking rooms Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Eldridge officiating, and interment was made in the Goodland cemetery. The mother of Mr. Van Vleet, Mrs. A. R. Van Vleet, and two brothers, Frank and Oscar Van Vleet, all of Danbury, Neb., were here at the funeral. It was learned from Frank Van Vleet that the deceased was only 35 years of age and leaves a wife and three children, the oldest a boy of nine years; and that the heart disease of which his brother died was the sequel of an attack of rheumatism some nine years ago.
