''''''''''''''''''''''''' Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), August 26, 1926, p. 1, col. 3 WAS NEARLY NINETY-THREE. Mrs. Katherine Hlavac, of Bruno, Passed Away August 15. Bruno, Aug. 23 - Mrs. Katherine Hlavac, nearly 93 years of age, resident of Butler county 53 years, died at the home of her grandson, Joseph Slosser, near Bruno, Sunday, Aug. 15. She had made her home with her grandson for about 3½ years. Previous to that she had lived alone in her own house in Bruno for about 30 years. Her age at time of her death was 92 years, 8 months and 23 days. Born in Velke Porezany, Czecho-Slovakia, November 22, 1833, her maiden name was Katherine Houska. She was married in that country to Frank Hlavac in 1851. They came to the United States in 1863, living in Stillville, Winneshiek county, Iowa, for 10 years and then in 1873, moving to Nebraska and Butler county, where Mrs. Hlavac spent the remainder of her life, a period of 53 years. Mr. Hlavac died July 6, 1881, at their farm home near Bruno, now owned by Joseph G. Slosser. Mr. and Mrs. Hlavac were the parents of 12 children, six sons and six daughters. Only three of the children survive their parents. They are Mrs. V. A. Proskovec and Mrs. Joseph G. Slosser of Bruno and John Hlavac living in South Dakota. There are 33 grandchildren, 96 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hlavac was a capable, intelligent, independent woman, with a healthy mind in a healthy body, and from pioneer days she was always a kind and helpful friend, giving of herself freely in sorrow and joy and need of the community in which she lived. Her spirit was ever young and she always delighted in the dances, attending them as long as her strength permitted her to mingle with the crowd. The funeral services were held in SS. Peter's and Paul's church in Abie on Tuesday, Aug. 17, Rev. Father Mlejnek conducting them. The pallbearers were Louis Egr, Jerry Fendrich, Dr. L. A. Proskovec and James Slosser. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery at Abie.
