Bio

The Wellington Leader, February 5, 1998, Wellington, TX Dewey Carroll Squyres died Jan. 20, 1998 in Corona, CA. Dewey Squyres grew up in the Quail and Lillie Community of Collingsworth County. He started preaching when he was 15 years of age. He became the first pastor of the Alanreed Baptist Church when he was 16. He was one of four generations of Southern Baptist preachers. His father, Charles Weyman Squyres, was pastor at Rolla, Lutie and Lone Mound. It was not unusual for a young preacher who felt the call to preach and serve as pastor of a small rural congregation after he was ordained. Later, he would enter a seminary to begin his theological studies. In the 1930's the ladies aid of this area as the women's group was called, gave Dewey a full scholarship to Wayland Baptist College, a junior college in Plainview. "This paid all my tuition, incidentals and room and board in the boys dormitory," he recalled. The boys dormitory at the time was on the third floor of the administration building. He graduated from Midwestern Baptist Seminary in Kansas City. While serving as pastor of a church in Lawton, OK he recalled, "I was there seven years and each year I baptized 150 people." Dewey went to California in 1949. He continued preaching until a few years ago when his health began to fail.
