SHELBY — William John Peters, 80, of Shelby, died August 11, 2012 at St. Joseph's Villa & Court in David City. Funeral services will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with Fr. Bernard Kimminau officiating. Interment will be in the Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery with military rites by the Shelby Legion Post. Dubas Funeral Home of Osceola and Stromsburg in charge of arrangements. William was born Feb. 11, 1932, to Piet and Minnie (Jacobs) Peters in David City. He attended St. Mary's Elementary School and graduated from David City High School in 1951. He attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Amarillo, Texas, and served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1956, when he was discharged from Bryant Air Force Base in College Station, Texas. After returning from the service he began farming west of Surprise. On Nov. 9, 1963, he was married to Marietta Gabriel at St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Osceola. His wife Marietta passed away July 28, 1992. William remained on the farm until September 2010. William moved to St. Joseph's Villa in David City.He loved farming and also enjoyed woodworking and tending flowers. He was a member of the Shelby American Legion and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby, where he had served on the church board. Survivors include his daughter, Lori (TJ) Rathjen of Shelby; four grandsons, Josh, Colton, Connor and Dylan Rathman; brothers John (Norma Jean) Peters of David City and Paul Peters of Seward; sisters Nellie Brockeveldt of David City, Marie (Joe) Kozisek of David City, Dorothy Zegers of David City, Virginia Brockevelt of David City; brothers-in-law Lester (Maura) Gabriel of Fredricksburg, VA, Bob (Sue) Gabriel of Waverly; sisters-in-law Rosetta Larson of Carson City, NV, Pat Gabriel of Shelby. He was preceded in death by his wife Marietta; parents Piet and Minnie Peters; sisters Christine Kozisek; sister-in-law Lucille Peters; brothers-in-law Morris Brockeveldt, Carl Zegers, Hank Brockevelt and Jerome Gabriel.
