When I think of MeeMaw, I immediately think of quilts. She loved to sew. She made the tiniest, straightest stitches I have ever seen, wrapping her family in warm, beautiful hugs with every stroke of her fingers. As a child, I had no idea how lucky I was to have such a great seamstress "on call," so-to-speak. Many of my favorite outfits were made by her nimble hands. Though she may have been sparing with words of love, acts of love were abundant. She was very free in giving things she had made with her hands...whether it be a shirt, a dress, a meal(her potatoes were my very favorite), a ceramic figurine, or one of those marvelous quilts. She grew the most beautiful hydrangeas I have ever seen. Indeed, she could grow most anything. Though my thumb is not as green as hers, I did inherit her love of feeling the earth between my fingers. I remember shelling peas with her--I always liked the purple-hulled because they stained your fingers. She would have a whole bushel done practically before I could blink my eyes. I didn't spend as much time with her as I should have, but then, when we look back, it seems that way with anyone you love. I think I'll just go and curl up with a (now well-worn) quilt and take a nap, confident that she is looking down and smiling. ___________________________________________________________ After raising her own family of three boys, Millie and her husband, John Henry Welch, took in the young children of Millie's sister, Hazel Virginia Tinney Carter and John Robert Carter, after their deaths.
