A Fatal Accident. On Friday last, in Rockford township, William Spencer, aged about 15 years, met with an accident that caused almost instant death. The young man was riding along on a load of hay and held a pitchfork in his hand, when the wagon wheels ran into a chuck hole and threw him off. In falling, the handle of the fork struck the ground first and he fell upon the tines, one of them entering his right eye and piercing the brain, causing death within a very few moments. The remains of the unfortunate boy were taken to the home of his father, Packard Spencer, who resides near Logan, at which place the funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. The deceased was a young man of exemplary habits and greatly beloved by all who knew him. source of obituary: The Council Bluffs Nonpareil (Council Bluffs, Iowa), April 22, 1887, page 5, columns 2 & 3
