Bio

A TRIBUTE published in the pages of The News Chronicle, Vallejo, CA-May 20, 1960 Memorial Obituary FAIRFIELD--Nicholas Garben, the city's oldest pioneer and a widely-known Solano county retired farmer, died today in a local hospital. Mr. Garben, who was 93, had lived in a home he built at 737 Broadway since 1913. Although he had been confined to his home for several years, he remained alert and in relatively good health until his death. He came here from Germany, where he was born, in 1883 and had resided in the Fairfield and Cordelia areas since then. In 1890, Mr. Garben married Annie Siebe, daughter of the late Claus F. Siebe with whom he was associated in farming for many years. Mrs. Garben died last May. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1940. He was a member of Suisun Lodge No. 111, Knights of Pythias. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Emma G. Ivory of San Francisco, four sons, Harry of San Francisco, Ernest of Visalia, and Edward and Arthur Garben Sr. of Fairfield; a sister, Mrs. Otto Sander, Germany, and two grandchildren, Mrs. Betty Jean Mason of Green Valley, and Arthur Garben Jr. There also are five great-grandchildren. Arthur Garben Sr., a Fairfield businessman, currently is president of Green Valley Country Club. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Suisun chapel of the Hansen-Bryan Funeral Home. Interment will take place in Rockville Cemetery._________________________________
