Bio

John Beck Phillips, 81, died August 2, 1998 of natural causes. Born April 24, 1917 in Lehi, Utah to George and Christine Elizabeth Harrison Phillips. John was raised in a farming family. He married Mary Afton Barratt, September 6, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple. John was a general contractor for over 50 years. He also enjoyed gardening and caring for his cats. He requested that his antique tools be donated to a museum, along with his famous collection of over 100 sets of salt and pepper shakers.A devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served a mission to the Northwestern States. He also faithfully performed many roles for his church including serving as Bishop for six years. Survived by four sons, Lee John, Johnston, PA; Reed Barratt, LaHabra Heights, CA; Dale George, Denver, CO; Grant James, Centerville, UT; sister, Martha LaVon Phillips, Garden Grove, CA; 19 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; brothers, Heber George and Edward Harrison Phillips. Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 6, 1998 in the Bennion LDS Ward Chapel, 6100 So. Kamas Drive, Taylorsville, Utah. Friends may call Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State and Thursday 10-10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Lehi City Cemetery. The family expresses special thanks to Tom Simmons, Tommie Sue Wright and Maryann Weed for their devoted care to John in his last several years. Published in the Deseret News.
