Bio

Betty Driskill, 83 of Belle Fourche died Sunday, July 15, 2012 at the Country Place Assisted Living in Belle Fourche with her family at her side. Betty was born June 5, 1929 in Sturgis, SD to Louis and Margaretta (Milek) O'Connell. Following her fathers death in 1944 she attended several schools, including St. Martins Academy, Sturgis, Belle Fourche and in 1946 she graduated from Lead High School. She attended Black Hills Normal in Spearfish earning her teaching certificate. She taught second grade in Sturgis for two years prior to her marriage. She married Robert "Bob" Driskill on December 27, 1951 in a double ceremony with her sister, Margaretta O'Connell and Richard Kuhl. After her family was raised she returned to college, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at Black Hills Teachers college in 1971. Following her education she taught fifth grade in Belle Fourche for 22 years before retiring in 1993. After her husband's death she had a sundial constructed at North Park School (where she taught) as a lasting memory of Bob and to use as a teaching tool for students many years down the road. Betty was instrumental in planting the tree grove (windbreak) at North Park School, along with Chuck Logan, naming it "Logan Lane" Betty loved nature and shared that love with all who knew her. Over the years she received many letters and thank you cards from students thanking her for her talent in education of the outdoors. She was a member of the Alter Society-Band 6, Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teachers Association, charter member of the Golden Hills Antique Club, Questers, Darton Geological Society, Den Mother for Cub Scouts and a member of the Jayceets. She is survived by her children and their families,3 brothers,her sister and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Margaretta O'Connell; husband, Robert "Bob" Driskill; daughter, Cheryl; sisters, Katherine Kelly and Margaretta Kuhl; siblings in infancy, Francis, Mary and Billy. A Christian Wake/Rosary will be held 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 18th at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Belle Fourche with Deacon Ray Klein officiating. Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 19th at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Father Tyler Dennis officiating. Burial followed at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the Hospice of the Northern Hills and the American Cancer Society.
