Bio

David Brown was born on July 8, 1839 in County Cavin, Ontario, Canada. He was given a common school education and spent nine years teaching school. He travelled by horseback to various schools to teach. His portable desk that he carried on his horse is now in possession of his great-granddaughter, Laura Plassmeyer. David first married Sarah, one of the daughters of William Raycraft. She died in about 1865, probably in childbirth, and David married her sister Catherine in 1866. Their first three children were born in Canada. (from the records of the Hampstead Presbyterian Church in North Easthope, Perth County, Ontario, Canada) "David Brown was ordained as a Ruling Elder in the Hampstead Presbyterian Church on July 5, 1872. He was removed from the church rolls on July 4th, 1873 due to his leaving Canada for the United States in January of that year." In January of 1873, David moved his wife and children and his mother Ellen from North Easthope, Canada to the United States. They lived in Benton County, Iowa before settling in Dodge County, Nebraska in the summer of 1873. The family lived in Fremont for a short time before renting a farm near Everett about fifteen miles northwest of Fremont. He soon became the owner of eighty acres on Maple Creek where all his children grew up. David planted many evergreen trees around his house on Maple Creek. He also had many hives of bees that he kept for honey and for pollinating his crops. David died at his home on Maple Creek and is buried in Ridge Cemetery.
