Dorothy R. (Turner) Surber, 86, of Friend, widow of Roy, died Saturday September 6, 2003, at the Friend Manor in Friend. She was born November 18, 1916, at Benedict, Nebraska to John W. and Maggie (Powell) Turner, the 2nd of three children. As a young girl she attended school in Benedict and York, apprenticing as a beautician in York. She was united in marriage on August 23, 1937 to Roy L. Surber at Aurora, Nebraska. They made their home in York until moving to Friend in 1939. Two children, a son, Jim, and a daughter, Joan, were born. She operated Dorothy's Beauty Shop in Friend from 1939 to 1963. Dorothy was a member of the United Church of Christ, Women's Fellowship, American Legion Auxiliary, Warren Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Order of Eastern Star Rose Standish Chapter #265 where she faithfully served at the station of Electa for many years. Dorothy also served as PNG of the Rebekah Lodge #58, all of Friend. She also was a member of the Naphis Temple #66 Daughters of the Nile and the Laf-A-Lot Club. Upon her retirement, Dorothy enjoyed traveling to several areas of the United States, especially to Branson. Dorothy loved her animals and enjoyed her kitty, "Mittens€", even after she became a resident of the Manor. In her spare time she enjoyed quilting, sewing and playing cards. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Rosalie Surber, Friend, daughter and son-in-law, Joan and David Petersen, Lincoln, two grandchildren, Patricia and her husband, Jeff Moody, and Paul Petersen, great-grandsons Davis and Connor Moody, all of Lincoln, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Grace Fischer, Mt Vernon, WA, Orville and Rachel Surber, Omaha, many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Maggie Turner, her husband, Roy in 1996, her brother Donald F. Turner and sister, Bernice Rice. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday September 9, 2003, at the United Church of Christ in Friend with Rev. Jack Scavo officiating. Interment is in Andrew Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 9-9 at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend and one hour before services at the church on Tuesday. Family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be given to Warren Memorial Hospital Foundation, United Church of Christ omen's Fellowship, or St. Elizabeth Hospice.
