Elijah Harvey McGehee (Harvey) was born 11 Jun 1887 in Little Springs, MS to John Hiram and Alice Catherine Ford McGehee. His began his career in the Mississippi State Senate in 1902 as a page boy where he practiced "more economy than law." In 1909 he graduated from Mississippi College and the University of Mississippi Law School and began to practice law in Monticello. He kept a private law practice in Monticello for 10 years before moving to Clarksdale. In 1910 he became county prosecutor in Lawrence County. He returned to the State Senate as a Senator in 1916 and served there until 1920. In 1933, he became a circuit judge. Harvey served on the circuit court bench until Gov. Hugh White appointed him to the Mississippi State Supreme Court in 1937. Harvey served in this capacity until his retirement in 1964. In 1949, he became the senior member of the State Supreme Court and its Chief Justice. In 1960, he chaired the National Conference of Chief Justices of State Supreme Courts. And in 1961, Mississippi College honored him as alumnus of the year. Judge McGehee passed away in a Yazoo City nursing home, and was survived by his wife, Willie Belle Brinson McGehee, and two children, Billy McGehee, a Vicksburg oil firm executive, and Mrs. Harry C. Frye. Mississippi state offices closed for his funeral 4 Nov 1965.
