Deloris Eileen Babcock 86, of North Loup passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City where she succumbed to Alzheimer's related health issues. Those left to mourn her passing are her son Allen Babcock (Betty) of rural Scotia, Nebraska and daughters Nadene Clement (Jim) of Brighton, Colorado and Phyllis Hanson (Joe) of North Loup, Nebraska. Eight grandchildren Travis Hanson (Candace) of Troy, IL; Andrea (Babcock) Rathgeber (Mark) of Dakota Dunes, SD; Amy (Clement) Leonard (Jim) of Brighton, CO; Jared Hanson (Joy) of Kansas City, MO; Alex Babcock of Lincoln, NE; Beth Clement of Lakewood, CO; Megan Clement of Phoenix, AZ; Brandon Hanson (Karla) of North Platte, NE; and nine great-grandchildren, Katlyn Hanson, Kasey Hanson, Dylan Leonard, Jacob Hanson, Riley Hanson, Nathan Rathgeber, Ian Leonard, Aaron Rathgeber, and Emsley Hanson. Also surviving are her two brothers, Arlin Schoemaker (Opal) of Peoria, AZ and Darvin Schoemaker (Barbara) of Ft. Morgan, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ike in 2008, and sisters Iva Culotta and Fern Trosper as well as two brothers in law Jack Culotta and Reynold Trosper. Deloris was born on the family farm in the Fish Creek neighborhood of rural Greeley County to Irvin William Henry Schoemaker and Elsie Esther Koelling Schoemaker on May 13, 1926. She was the third of five children born to this couple and at a young age she learned to value responsibility and hard work after her father suffered the partial loss of his right arm in a farm related accident. She attended the Fish Creek rural school through the 10th grade and graduated from Scotia High School in 1943. Following graduation she worked at a munitions plant in Grand Island as she was very patriotic and wanted to do her part to help with the war effort. She married Iradell (Ike) Babcock on December 27, 1945 at the Fish Creek Evangelical Church after he returned from serving in the Marines during World War II. Deloris was baptized at this church, where she was a member and faithfully attended with her family throughout her life until 1998, when she became a member of the North Loup United Methodist Church. While Ike engaged in farming, Deloris began a short career as a teacher in several rural schools until 1955 when she was hired by the North Loup Valley Bank. The same year they moved to their home west of North Loup where they lived and raised their children. In 2007, after a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease, she went to live at Rose Lane Home in Loup City until the time of her passing. After retirement from the bank in 1991, Deloris became a certified lay speaker throughout Nebraska for the United Methodist Church, in addition to regular appointments as a delegate to the Nebraska United Methodist annual church conference. She was a faithful participant in United Methodist Women and felt strongly about their commitment to mission work. She also had the opportunity to become more involved in the American Legion Auxiliary where she eventually was elected to the position of Nebraska State President followed by appointments to national committee responsibilities. This gave her the opportunity to travel to numerous National Conventions throughout the United States, something she found rewarding and very fulfilling. Deloris will be remembered for her love of her family and her devotion to them. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren always brought a smile to her face and she faithfully prepared angel food cakes for any and all family birthdays. She attended many sports and school activities to watch her grandchildren play/perform, and was present at their high school and college graduations until her health deteriorated. She was proud that all eight grandchildren graduated from college. She was a devoted Christian who served her Lord tirelessly until her health prohibited this activity. There was a prayer given before each and every meal in her household as well as daily devotions. She was known by all as a hard worker and someone who would come through when a task needed to be completed. She loved to show her love for others through food and was appreciated by attendees at local potlucks for her delicious casseroles, especially her carrot casserole. There were always baked goods and treats on the kitchen counter, or could be quickly produced from the freezer. Deloris hated to throw anything away and was known by her children and grandchildren as the "queen of leftovers", a title she wore with pride. Deloris loved music, especially Christian music and the old gospels. When she became anxious and "feisty" at Rose Lane Home, staff found her emotions were calmed quickly by playing her religious music. She had a beautiful soprano voice and sang for many weddings, funerals, church solos, and church choirs throughout her life. Deloris will be greatly missed by those who were lucky enough to have known and loved her. She will be a "tough act to follow," but she gave us a blueprint on how to love our Lord and Savior, follow his commandments, treat our neighbor as ourselves, and show our love for others. "Well done good and faithful servant." Services will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the North Loup United Methodist Church with Pastor Bruce Phillips officiating.
