Bio

Mary Ann Ashton Thomas, daughter of Thomas and Mary Howard Ashton was born in a covered wagon on Oct.7, 1848 at the west fork of the Grand River, Pottawatomie Co., Iowa. She was the 4th child having 1 brother, Joseph, and 2 sisters, Catherine and Margaret who died in infancy. Her mother and a baby sister died when Mary was about 2 1/2 years old. Her father was left with 2 small children and having to be away from home a great deal of his time, he married Sarah E. Mills. She died the following year. She died the following year bearing a baby boy. Her father then married Arminta A. Lawrence who reared and cared for her and her brother Joseph as though they were her own children. Mary grew to love this woman as her own mother. In the spring of 1841, Mary being about 4 years old, the family crossed the plains in the company of Captain Morris Phelps and settled in Salt Lake Valley. In October of the same year they moved to Evansville, later named Lehi. Here she grew to womanhood and was instrumental in the growth and development of the community. On New Years Day, 1866, she married Daniel Thomas at her home. He was a farmer and stock raiser. On October 8th they went to the Endowment House and were sealed for eternity. She assisted her husband in homesteading land. Thomas was herding cattle when we was called to serve in the Black Hawk Indian War for two years. She carried on at home and had a son, Daniel, in his absence. She was a visiting teacher for many years and went to the temple at every opportunity. She always worked unselfishly in the Red Cross during the World War, knitting socks and making surgical bandages and cheese that she sent to the soldiers. She was the mother of 10 children.
