Son of John Anton and Agnes Kuchar, veteran of World War II
Long-time resident and former Mayor of Columbus, William A. Kuchar, 78, died July 27, 1997 at Columbus Community Hospital. Born to John Anton and Agnes Kuchar on May 20 , 1919, he was an active member of the community for many years. After 34 years of affiliation with the Colorado County Savings and Loan Association, Mr. Kuchar retired as the Executive Vice-President and Manager. Prior to that, he worked for the Colorado County Agricultural Conservation Service, and served Colorado County as its Deputy and Deputy Clerk. During World War II he was a member of the United States Army. Mr. Kuchar was Mayor of Columbus from 1973-1979 and was on the City Council for a total of 12 years. A member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, he served as Grand-Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 2971. Mr. Kuchar also held positions within the community as Post Commander and Adjutant of the American Legion Post 383 and President of the Columbus Rotary Club. He was also an associate member of the Sheriff's Association of Texas and a life member of the Magnolia Homes Tour, Inc. The Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce, of which he was a long standing member, named him Citizen of the Year in 1990. In that same year, the Older Texan Task Force selected him as Outstanding Older Texan. Mr. Kuchar was a member of the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years, serving as its secretary-treasurer for 20 years. He helped to organize and served as director of Columbus Crime Stoppers, served on the Columbus Community Hospital Board of Directors, was an honorary member of the FFA and served on the Board of Directors of Life Savings Band in Austin as well as on the Board of Directors of the Texas Savings and Loan League. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Agnes Tengler Kuchar. Mr. Kuchar is survived by his wife, Gertrude Kuchar; his children, William Kuchar, Jr. of Houston, Shirley Kuchar Rosson of Katy, Michael Kuchar of Columbus; and children through marriage, Sue Naumann Nichols of Marble Falls, LeRoy Naumann of Georgia, Alice Naumann Craighead of South Carolina; a total of 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A Rosary was held at 7 p.m., July 28, 1997. Funeral services were held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 10 a.m., July 29, 1997, followed by interment at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dwight Mazac, Robert Thomas, James Seymour, Chris Stein and grandsons William Kuchar III, Brandt Rosson, Brian Nichols and Blake Craighead. Honorary pallbearers were John Meismer, Roy Heffley, Lonnie Coleman and members and retirees of the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department. Memorials may be made to Columbus Community Hospital Renovation Fund in lieu of flowers. Services under the direction of Henneke Funeral Home, Columbus, Texas.
