KELLOGG Ruth Marie Grabinski, a former Moscow cafe owner, died Friday at the Shoshone Living Center at Kellogg, Idaho, from congestive heart failure. She was 84. She was born Sept. 5, 1907, at King Hill, Idaho, to Charles and Bertha Nickels-Furnish Johnston. She was raised at King Hill. Grabinski graduated from the University of Idaho at Moscow in the 1930s with a master's degree in education and a doctoral degree in music. She taught school at Troy, Idaho, for a short time. She moved to Chicago, where she sang with the Chicago Metropolitan Opera. She married Eddie Grabinski. The couple later divorced. Returning to Moscow, she owned and operated the Derby Cafe there until the late 1940s. She then moved to San Francisco and owned and operated guest houses for a number of years. Grabinski moved back to Moscow in the 1960s, working as a waitress and bookkeeper for Johnnie's Cafe for about 10 years. In May 1991, she moved to Kellogg to be near her family. She was interested in politics and was a fan of San Francisco baseball and football teams. Survivors omitted per Find a Grave policy. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Moscow Cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Wassmuth of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Genesee will officiate.
