Nellie Jo Bridwell 1921 - 2012 On June 25, 2012, Nellie Jo Bridwell, a resident of Pensacola for nearly 40 years, passed away quietly at the age of 90 in the presence of loving family members. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, William Bridwell. She will be remembered, loved and honored always by her four sons, her daughter, 7 grandchildren, and eleven great grand children. Born in Duncan, Oklahoma, in 1921, her early life was marked by tragedy and hardship. She lost her mother at the age of nine to a common illness at a time when antibiotics were still unknown. A few months later the great depression of the 1930's struck causing additional years of hardship and family separations for this young resident of dust bowl era Oklahoma. After the difficulties of her formative years she entered young adulthood at the onset of World War II, and as the wife of an Army officer again encountered lengthy separations, hardship and ultimately divorce. Always persistent and resourceful, she took flying lessons, numerous college courses and classical ballet and dance training, including training at the Royal Academy of Ballet in London, England. She remarried, raised her 5 children, and worked throughout her young life as a dance instructor. She loved the arts and was a lifelong devotee of classical dance and theater, as well as an accomplished amateur painter. She also traveled extensively, visited most of the capitals of Europe, and lived in Great Britain for four years and Madrid, Spain for a year. Her long life was exciting, eventful, and extremely well lived. She will be missed.
