Gladys M. Karel, 87, died on June 21, 2012, at the Golden Living Center in Clarkson. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, June 25, at Ss Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Clarkson with Father Tim Forget celebrating the Mass. Interment will be in the Clarkson Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to The Clarkson Museum, The Clarkson Opera House, or Bishop Newman School. Gladys was born on June 14, 1925, to Frank J. Barta Sr. and Anna (Konsel) on a farm north of Howells, Nebraska. Gladys taught school for four years beginning at Dist. #53 for one year, two years at Wayne County, one year at Dist. #30 in Glandt District. She later worked at Moore's Store until she retired. On September 9, 1947, she married Leonard Karel. They lived on a farm north of Clarkson until 1993 then moved into Clarkson for their retirement years. They had four children, Dave, Dan, Patti, and Nancy. She was a member of Red Cross Bloodmobile, Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, Catholic Ladies Guild, Altar Society, Church Choir, Parish Council, Clarkson Library, Past Officer and Trustee of the Clarkson Historical Society Museum, Clarkson Historical Opera House, and Lincoln Stars and Stripes Sertoma Club. She was a volunteer at Golden Living Center receiving many Volunteer of the Year Awards. She was also the recipient of the Aksarben Good Neighbor Award and the Clarkson Commercial Club Outstanding Community Service Award.
