Bio

Thomas graduated from the University of Virginia in 1940. He worked on the Panamerican Highway in Costa Rica for 14 months. He fought two years in the Pacific in WWII, in the Phillipines and Japan. He was the City Manager of Alta Vista, Virginia. Thomas Benjamin Noland Sr.  Thomas Benjamin Noland Sr., age 93, of King's Grant Retirement Community in Martinsville, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was born near Waynesboro (ed: b- near Waynesville, Haywood County, NC) on May 12, 1915 to the late Robert Long and Addie DeHart Noland. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army. During 31 months of enlisted service the Army's Amphibian Engineers, 593rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment, he participated in three D-Day assault landings during the New Guinea campaign, then served in the Philippines and with the occupation force in Japan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 61 years, Annie Marie Choate Noland; his second wife, Phyllis Blackwell Noland; a daughter, Sarah Jane N. Williams; three brothers; and three sisters. He is survived by one son, Thomas B. Noland Jr. of Blountsville, Ala.; two granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec. 8 at First United Methodist Church in Martinsville with burial in Sparta cemetery. The Rev. Ron Mateer and the Rev. James R. Noland officiated. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 146 East Main Street, Martinsville, VA 24112.
