Bio

Sarah Winnetta 'Winnie' Willard was born July 19, 1891 in Iowa Park, Texas (Wichita County), daughter of Exum Enestes Willard (1860-1948) and Lura Belle Flemons Willard (1866-1938). Sarah first married James Wyman Thompson, who was born August 9, 1882, in Ft Gibson, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). The World War I Draft Registration Cards show that James registered for the draft on September 12, 1918 in Wichita County, Texas. He gave his full name; his birthdate as August 9, 1882; his age as 36; his residence as Iowa Park, Texas (Wichita County); and his wife as Sarah Winnie Thompson of Iowa Park. Sarah and James had four children: Buddy Thompson, Calvin Thompson, Winifred Thompson, and Virginia Thompson. James died February 24, 1930 in Spavinaw, Oklahoma (Mayes County). Sarah second married Benjamin Franklin DeSpain Jr., who was born September 24, 1884 in Texas, son of Benjamin Franklin DeSpain and Isabelle Marvel. Benjamin had been married before to Lillian Gee and had several children by that marriage. The 1940 Federal Census for Edinburg, Texas (Hidalgo County) shows Ben DeSpain, a retail coffee salesman, age 56, born in Texas; and his wife, Sarah, operator of home laundry, age 48, born in Texas. Also living with them were Sarah's four children by her first marriage: Buddy Thompson, age 16; Calvin Thompson, age 15; Winifred Thompson, age 13; and Virginia Thompson, age 11; all born in Texas. Benjamin died June 19, 1967 in Austin, Texas (Travis County) and was buried there in the Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery and Mausoleum. Sarah died February 4, 1987 in Austin, Texas and was buried beside her husband in Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery and Mausoleum. Copyright©2013Nancy Ladd. All rights reserved.
