from Billings Gazette HARDIN-Jess Claude Schwend,66, Hardin area rancher, died Tuesday night in Billings Deaconess Hospital of head injuries received in a farm accident. He was working with heavy plastic pipe at his ranch near St. Xavier when the injury occurred. Schwend and his son "Corky" had been active in NRC rodeos as a father and son team and had placed nationally in team tying events. He had moved into Hardin in 1967 but continued to operate the ranch since 1941 Mr. Schwend was born March 13, 1904, in Deer Lodge, a son Mr. and Mrs. Claude A. Schwend. He attended Bridger schools. Before 1935 he had worked in road construction and dirt hauling, using a team of horses and wagon. He married Mildred Lorraine Shalmerdine, July 16, 1927, in Billings. He was a member of Sheridan, Wyo., Elks Club; the Big Horn County Rancher's Assoc., the National Farmers Org., the Hardin Rodeo Assoc., and the Northern International Livestock Exposition 200 Club. The Schwends raised quarter horses and cattle. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Bullis Funeral chapel. Burial and graveside services will be at Bridger Montana cemetery. Survivors include the widow and son, Glen, of Hardin; a daughter, Mrs B.J. Tally, Billings, MT; four brothers, Albert and Bill of Bridger, Walter of Roberts and Jack of Forsyth; three sisters, Mrs. Gordon Anderson of Bridger, Mrs. Ervin Ellis of St. Xavier, Mrs. Evelynn Lawson of Eaton, Colo., and Mrs.Elmer Larson of Bridger and five grandchildren.
