Alfred Novotny, 84, of Elba, Nebraska died Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Central City Nebraska Care Center. Alfred was born April 19, 1928 in Elba, NE. to Jerry and Agnes Placek Novotny. Alfred was raised in Elba and attended Elba Schools where he graduated in 1946. Alfred entered the U.S. Air Force on January 9, 1951. During his time in the Air Force, he was a radio mechanic. He received his discharge on September 9, 1952. He then began working for Floyd Tesmer at Tesmer Electric in St. Paul, Nebraska. Alfred was united in marriage to Gloria Svoboda on June 4, 1955 in Elba. He started his own company and operated Novotny Electric. He and Gloria lived and farmed acreage where they had a small herd of cattle. Alfred enjoyed fishing and being involved in all aspects of the local fire department. Alfred was active in the community, serving on the Elba School Board and the Elba Cemetery Board. Alfred & Gloria were lifetime members of the Elba United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the Trustees and on the administrative board of the church. He served on Elba Fire District and served as Secretary Treasure of the Elba Fire Department and EMT. He served as Fire Chief for 27 years and retired in 1990. Alfred was also a lifetime member of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul. He was elected high office of Area B Vice-Commander, also served as Post Commander, Howard County Commander, District VI Adjutant, Vice Commander and Commander. He received District VI Citizenship Award in 1990. Survivors are: his wife, Gloria Novotny of St. Paul, NE.; sons and daughters-in-law, Wendell and Anna Novotny of Grand Island, NE. and Donald and Kathy Novotny of Fort Collins, CO.; daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and LaVern Obermeier of Lincoln, NE.; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Rose Lee Novotny of St. Paul, NE. . Alfred was preceded in death by parents; an infant brother and brothers Gerald and Franklin Novotny. Burial at Elba Cemetery, Elba, NE. with military graveside rites by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul, NE.. Published in The Grand Island Independent on June 1, 2012
