Florence Marsh Oates, 94, died December 10, 2005, in Provo, Utah. She was born July 7, 1911 in Almo, Idaho to John and Florence Green Marsh. She was delivered by her grandmother, Annie Green, the local midwife, in her grandparents' log cabin. The family lived in Salt Lake City until she was 11 years old. In 1922 they moved to Los Angeles, California where she graduated from Lincoln High School with honors and attended Sawyer Business College for one year. On February 4, 1932 she married Ernest Oates in Glendale, California and they were sealed in the Mesa, Arizona Temple four days later. She was very active in the LDS Church, serving in many capacities over the years: Relief Society President twice, MIA President, State Relief Society and MIA boards, Sunday School and Primary teachers, Stake Gleaner President, visiting teacher for all her adult life. She and Ernest served both a stake mission and a full time mission in the Northern States Mission in Canton, Illinois. Always active in the community, she served as PTA president at the elementary and Junior High levels and received an honorary lifetime membership in that organization. She was also involved in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts while the family lived in Pasadena, California. Their home was always open to young people, many of whom stayed for extended periods, including eight years of housing missionaries. In 1973 she and Ernest moved to Bloomington, Utah where they soon became involved in church and civic affairs. She was a Temple worker, a Pink Lady at the hospital, and was President of the Southwest Series (now the Celebrity Series). They traveled the world over many times, and when Ernest died in 1996, they had just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Her love and devotion were to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Irene Cattani of Tempe, AZ; Diane (Phil) Nolen of Greenwood Village, CO; foster son, Edward J. (Gayle) Wells of Moraga, CA; daughter-in-law Selene Oates of Provo, UT; 24 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Rex (Ann) Marsh of Orem, UT. She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Oates, son Ernest D. Oates, daughter Elaine Woolley, son-in-law Ray Cattani, brother Lewis Marsh, and sister Ruth Fryling.
