Bio

Ralph E. Womack, 87, of Villa Grove died at 4:54 p.m. Saturday (May 26, 2012) at the Palm Terrace Health Care Center in Mattoon. Mr. Womack was born Dec. 2, 1924, in Indianola, a son of Lute and Anna Stevens. He was adopted by Fred and Jennie Womack. He married Katherine Compton in 1948; she died in 1964. He then married Zarlene Moore in 1965; she died in 2000. Surviving are sons, Bob Womack of Jacksonville, Brad Jones of Terre Haute, Ind., and Doug Moore of Camargo; daughters, Carol Brewer of Villa Grove and Laura Miller of Urbana; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Womack was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, two brothers and one sister. Mr. Womack worked for the C & E I Railroad while in high school as a lineman and for the Wabash Railroad as a brakeman. Ralph started his military service with the U.S. Air Force to train as a pilot but the training was full so he transferred to the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Saipan and Tinian Island; he was on the Island of Tinian for the duration of the war and was on the island when the Indianapolis brought the atomic bombs to the island for departure to be dropped on Japan. After the war, Ralph returned to the Wabash RR and then went to work for the new chemical plant in Tuscola, USI, and retired from there in 1988. Ralph enjoyed camping and fishing. Many summers were spent at the Lake of the Ozarks and Sherwood Forest. He collected coins and die-cast cars. He made many wooden cars and trucks which the family still has.
