RUSSELL STRUTHERS DIES Russell Struthers, 67, chairman of the board at Jones National Batik and Trust, Seward, died Tuesday, January 19 at a Lincoln Hospital. Struthers came to Seward in 1939 to join the law firm of Matzke and Bek, an association which was broken in 1942 when Struthers served In the U.S. Army Office of Provost Marshal General, doing Intelligence work during World War II. When he returned to Seward after the war, he was Seward County Veteran's Service Officer from, 1946-47. He Joined the staff at Jones National Bank In 1947, where he served in various offices. He was made president of the bank in 1963 and was elected chairman of the board in 1978 and served in that capacity until his death. Struthers attended Craig High School in Burt County and the University of Nebraska, from which he was graduated with a bachelor of law degree, cum laude in 1937, and a Juris doctor degree in 1968. Prior to his graduation, he was awarded the order of the coif. When the Seward Memorial Hospital committee was founded in 1947. Struthers became a member and served as secretary of the hospital board of directors since the building was completed in 1950. When the Sundermann Home was given to the hospital. Struthers became a member of that Institution's board, too. Struthers was appointed secretary of the Seward Board of Education in the early 1950s and later was elected to two terms on the board. He was a member during the reorganization of the district and at the time when the senior high building was constructed. While employed by the bank, Struthers was acting county Judge of Seward County for about 20 years, filling the office of the county Judge during the absence, incapacity or disqualification of the county Judge. Struthers helped organize the Community, Scholarship Committee and served on It for a number of years. He was a member of the Seward Rotary, Club for about 30 years and served as Its president in 1954. He had been a member of American Legion Post. 33 since 1945 was a longtime member of the Chamber of Commerce and served for several years on the Seward County Fair Board. He served the Seward County, Red Cross, in various capacities, was first president of the Seward Community Development corporation. He was a member of the board at Seward Lumber and Fuel and of the Seward Industrial Development Corporation. Within the past year, he became a member of the newly formed Seward Foundation board. Struthers married Velma Dowding of Seward in 1943, and she and the couple's five daughters survive him. They are: Sandra (Mrs. Ben) Hain and Ann (Mrs. Salem) El-Ommami. both of Omaha, Mary (Mrs. Ken) Trauernicht and Amy both of Lincoln, and Bonnie of Seward. He is also survived by five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Seward. From the Seward County Independent, Seward, Nebraska, Wednesday, January 20th, 1982
