Bio

Stroud Merchant, State Official and Civic Leader, Joseph "Joe" Sykora, departed this life on November 16, 2003, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the age of 83 years. Joe was a long-time Lincoln County, Oklahoma, resident who was born on May 15, 1920, in Prague. Joe was the son of Peter and Clara (Raska) Sykora. He married Irene Kuban in Prague, Oklahoma on May 20, 1948. He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force during WW II, serving in Washington DC and the South Pacific. Joe was listed in the Who's Who in the South and Southwest in Commerce and Industry, was the former President of the Oklahoma Water Resources Board, served on the Governors Industrial Advisory Council, Oklahoma advisory council of Vocational Education, on the board of the Oklahoma Centennial committee, past President of the Stroud School Board and past President of the Stroud Chamber of Commerce. He was a long time member of the St Louis Catholic Church, Stroud, Oklahoma, serving on the parish council. Along with his brother Paul, he owned and operated the Sykora's Furniture and Appliance store in Stroud, Oklahoma for 40 plus years. Joe was awarded the lifetime achievement award from the Stroud Chamber of Commerce, appreciation award from the Stroud Centennial Stearing Committee and an appreciation award for volunteer work from the Stroud Chamber of Commerce. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and two grandchildren, Sarah & Maria Roberts. Survivors include: wife: Irene of the home; one son: James Sykora of OKC, OK; two daughters and sons-in-law: Mary Margaret & Richard Roberts of Lawton, OK, Susan & Eric Eckman of OKC, OK; 6 grandchildren: Megan Roberts of Washington, DC Greg Roberts of Los Angles, CA, Andrew Roberts of Lawton, OK, Joseph, Charlie & Irene Eckman of OKC, OK; one brother: Paul Sykora of Stroud, OK. Wake Prayer Vigil will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at 7:00 P.M. at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Stroud. Mass of the Christian Burial, will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2003, at 10:00 A.M., at the St Louis Catholic Church in Stroud, Oklahoma, with Father Adrian Vorderlandwehr officiating. Burial will follow at the Catholic Cemetery in Prague, Oklahoma, under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Stroud, Oklahoma.
