Bio

Mary Louise Hoelscher Franki passed away in San Antonio May 16th, 2012. Mary loved so many things in life and life itself. She loved God, her family, her friends, everyone else, her pets, her garden, beautiful clothes, good food and so much else, possibly in that order. Her big wide smile was known to all who encountered her. She was a lot of fun and enjoyed a good time and a party. She was a beautiful lady with her high cheekbones, big brown twinkling eyes, and elegant figure, which was always set off with style. She was born December 2, 1919 the thirteenth child of Rosa and Joseph Hoelscher, in Westphalia, Texas, a town that her family helped to found in the 1800s A fifth generation Texan, she was so proud of her family and loved all of them, her parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins of all degree as well as their spouses. She spent so much of her life surrounded by them as a child and an adult. Her brothers, the late Frank, Charles, Ernest, and Lawrence Hoelscher lived in Alice and spending time with them and their children was what she enjoyed doing most. Her other siblings, who all predeceased her, were Emma Karnowski, Adelia Reinders, Annie Shannon, Matilda Hoelscher, Rosalie Salvagio and, Alfred, Pius "Pope" and Joseph Hoelscher all lived in Texas. She loved going to the Hoelscher Family Reunions where she made sure to connect with as many as possible of the hundreds there. The love of her life was her husband, Guido Franki, who passed away in 2000. She met him in Alice, where they were both worked at the Jim Wells County Courthouse, and they married May 10, 1952 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in Alice. She loved the Franki family like they were her own and enjoyed all of her relatives in-law so much. The great pride and joy of her life were her children, Julene (Ken Wilson), Mark (Carole) and Greg (Gaynell), who all adored her and considered her a dear friend as well as the best mother in the world. She had her children later in life and was overjoyed to have seen all of her grandchildren, Elise, Danielle, Thomas, Kristen, and Franchesca Franki and Marie Franki Hanan (Michael). Mary was a devout Catholic all of her life, and much of her life revolved around St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Alice. Her family joined the church when her family moved to Alfred, Texas when she was a child. She was a member of the Altar Society and later the Mother's Club when her children attended St. Elizabeth's School. She had a great many friends, enjoyed them all and was always ready to make new ones. Mary had a green thumb and her back yard was a paradise of all sorts of fruit and nut bearing trees, flowering plants and vegetables. Both she and Guido loved to work in the garden together, although Guido was much fonder of his oak trees, grape vines, fruit trees and vegetables than flowers. So many happy memories were made in the family backyard barbeques that occurred often with family and friends. None of these words can fully describe the feisty cowgirl and the gracious lady that was Mary Franki. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Rosary will be held at Holmgreen Mortuary at 7:00 pm Sunday May 20, 2012 with the Funeral Mass at St Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church at 10:00 am Monday May 21, 2012. Burial will follow in Alice Cemetery.
