Bio

Ellen R. Holmquist, 86, of rural Waseca, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at the Lake Shore Inn Nursing Home. Funeral services were held at Christ the King Catholic Church, Medford, with the Rev. Robert Herman officiating. Ellen Rose Holmquist, the daughter of Adolph and Clementine (Stangler) Hofmann, was born on Jan. 16, 1913, in Janesville Township, Waseca County. She grew up in the Elysian area and graduated from Waterville High School in 1930. She obtained her certification as a teacher from the Le Center Normal School and spent a few years teaching at various country schools. On Feb. 19, 1935, she married Ernest William Holmquist at the St. Andrews Catholic Church in Elysian. The Holmquists purchased their farm located in Blooming Grove Township in 1940, and have lived and farmed there ever since. She was a member of the Waseca County Farm Bureau. She was a very active member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Deerfield, serving as a Catholic Daughter for over 24 years. She and her husband spent several years of their retirement wintering in the South Texas area. She is survived by her husband, Ernie; two foster sons, Tim (and Holly) Jewison, and Terry (and Carol) Jewison, all of Blooming Grove Township; five grandchildren; two half-sisters, Agnes David of Ellendale, and Irene (and Harry) Youngquist of Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Adolph; one sister, Evelyn Jewison; and an infant granddaughter, Heather Fay on April 25, 1977. Courtesy of John Dalby database
