John Lesley enlisted with the Union army at age 15. He was being held prisoner in Alabama when he was put on the Sultana to be taken up the Mississippi River to be paroled. He survived the explosion on the ship that took place on 27 April 1865. Of the 2500 men onboard the overcrowded ship, Lesley was one of 800 who survived the disaster.
