Bio

ANTON (Halvorsen) HILL, 76, DIES AT ALVARADO Anton Hill, well known Marshall County pioneer, died at his home in Alvarado, November 14, 1928, at the age of 76 years, one month and 25 days. Mr. Hill was born: (and Baptized Anton Halvorsen son of Halvor Aslaksen and Ingri Olsdatter) in Christiania, now Oslo, Norway, September 14 1852. He came to America May 22, 1871, and was married to Christina Erickson September 9, 1876 at Eau Claire, Wisconsin. This union was blessed with nine children, namely: Henry, Alfred and Mrs. Oscar [Minnie] Sands of Alvarado, Mrs. Fred [Emma] Brunzell of Berkeley, California, David of Minneapolis, and Emil of Donaldson, Minnesota; also three children deceased, Edwin, who died ten years ago, and Ida and Arthur who died in infancy. Deceased also leaves two brothers. Die Hill of Duluth, Minnesota, and Emil Hill of Granite Falls Washington. He also leaves twenty grandchildren and two great﷓grandchildren, all living. His good wife, who has been a faithful companion during 52 years of married life, also mourns him Mr.Hill came to Marshall County in 1881 and settled on a homestead in section eight, Town of Vega. When the town was organized in 1883, Mr. Hill became the first assessor of the town. Later he served as chairman of the County Board and was active in county politics for a number of years. But, it as a lay preacher that Anton Hill will be best remembered, he traveled around quite extensively in this and other states conducting religious services in the scattered Scandinavian communities. Though not trained, his earnestness as a Christian and devotion to the Master's cause made his work a blessing to many people. After he retired from farming a number of years ago, Mr. Hill made his home in Alvarado and it was from there that he was called to his heavenly home. The funeral was held at the Bethlehem Norwegian Lutheran Church at Alvarado on Monday, November 19 at 2 p.m. and was conducted by Rev. J. 0. Jacobson, pastor of the Scandinavian, Evangelical Free Church of Thief River Falls and Rev. H. S. Strand of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Warren. Rev. Jacobson delivered an impressive funeral sermon in the Norwegian language, and Rev. Strand spoke words of comfort and admonition in the English language. A choir rendered two appropriate songs. The church was filled with relatives and friends who came to pay their last tribute of respect and esteem to the departed. A wreath of flowers adorned the beautiful coffin. Interment was made in the Alvarado cemetery. Thus has another pioneer settler of this county finished his work and gone to his rest and his good deeds will follow him. Peace to his memory. From the Warren Sheaf November 21, 1928
